I could go all story fashion and tell you about how eBooks will take flight, taking over the world as they flutter from continent to continent; however, we all know it would happen in a large swoop! But on a serious note…
The trends of instant satisfaction brought about by the quickest and most reliable technology can be seen in every aspect of our lives, and that includes our readers! Readers want more books in less space now. They want the mobility of an eBook and the joy of having it at their fingertips on command. Although we have those who prefer the traditional feel of a soft or hardcover book to caress the pages as they stroll through the words their favorite (or new) authors have compiled for them.
The top reasons given to me by associates, friends and readers to the preference of eBooks over softcover are:
- eBooks –
- more in less space
- available immediately
- don’t get dusty
- no shelf space needed
- less expensive (book cost)
- Softcovers –
- no batteries
- no blinding electronic eye fatigue
- great on the beach
- good to read in the tub
- no device expenses (Kindle, nook, ereader)
eBooks, it would seem, are making their way into most all avid readers lives. Students are using more eBooks now, as well, versus the softcovers.
Sales for eBooks have climbed the charts giving the softcovers a run for their space! I, too, have been mostly converted to buying eBooks rather than filling shelves that I do not have for the soft cover versions. Over the last four years, the sales have continued to climb for eBooks. In the article, “For E-books, More Good New, Few Trends: Facts & Figures 2013,” it clearly shows the sales are slowing in rate yet still closing the gap between their softcover adversaries.
Fiction e-books seem to be at the top of the lists for sales: “… hardcover print figures are still ahead of digital numbers, the gap is narrowing. This is most evident in fiction, where the top 15 in print are also among the strongest e-book titles.”
It would seem from the statistics point of view that sales will continue to rise even if at a slower rate. eBooks are safe in the sales department.
From personal experience, I can say that I have purchased more eBooks over the last two years than ever before. As an author, I can say that I sell more eBooks than softcovers! If the trends continue on the path they currently are on, the sales for eBooks will continue to rise.
